The US now has its most anti-gun surgeon general in history. Rabidly anti-gun Dr. Vivek Murthy was confirmed by the lame duck Senate Democrats this week 51-43, proving the voters right. Republican Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois cast the 51st and only Republican “yea” vote. Only 3 Democrats voted against Murthy: Joe Donnelly (IN), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), and Joe Manchin (WV). Thad Cochran (R-MS) did not vote, certainly because of the recent passing of his wife whose visitation was in Mississippi at the time of the vote.
The gun banners over at Everytown and Gabby Giffords’ camp are already dancing in the streets, because Murthy is a gun banner. The NRA was supposed to score this vote, and hopefully there will be more lame ducks next election. In my personal experience, lame ducks will bite you. But ducks have no teeth, and you can wring their necks.
Here is the roll call vote on Murthy. You may want to print it out and save it until the next senate election.
Even worse, the lame Duckocrats are planning to confirm up to 88 of President Barack Obama’s judicial nominations this year, a total that would be the highest for any president in two decades.
Last year, under Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Democrats made it harder for the minority party to block nominations by weakening the Senate’s rule on filibusters to require only a simple majority vote, rather than 60%. So far this year, the Senate has confirmed 76 federal court of appeals and district court judges, all of them lifetime appointments. Well, at least we got rid of Reid.
