Oh, Canada
- Canada’s federal firearm buyback program has cost its taxpayers nearly $67.2 million since it was announced in 2020, but it still hasn’t collected a single gun.
- Meanwhile, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has lost 205 firearms since 2020, including machine-guns.

The Only Ones
- Follow-up. Former Houston police officer Gerald Goines was convicted Wednesday of two counts of murder in the January 2019 deaths of Dennis Tuttle, 59, and his 58-year-old wife Rhogena Nicholas. The couple, along with their dog, were fatally shot after officers burst into their home using a corrupt “no-knock” warrant that didn’t require them to announce themselves before entering. Goines faces up to life in prison.
- Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced a department policy Wednesday formally banning so-called deputy gangs. Apparently they need a policy for that.
- You’ve seen the news that Letcher County, KY, Sheriff Shawn M. “Mickey” Stines, 43, was charged with one count of murder in the first degree after he fatally shot a Kentucky district judge – a former close friend – following an argument inside the courthouse. Stines has pleaded not guilty and faces a potential death penalty if convicted. We have an unconfirmed report that the judge had been having illegal relations with the sheriff’s underage daughter. If that proves true, a jury can make things right.
- An unidentified on-duty US Secret Service Uniformed Division officer negligently shot and injured himself Saturday evening while handling his weapon in Washington, DC. His injury is not life threatening. That is all the information USSS shared. The current issue sidearm for the Uniformed Division is the 9mm Glock 19. It does not go bang unless the trigger is pulled.
- Leslie Boileau, a deputy with the Marion County, Florida Sheriff’s Office, has been charged with manslaughter and terminated from the department after he negligently shot and killed his girlfriend while they were drinking and cleaning/handling/dry firing guns at his home in Ocala. The fatal shot to her forehead was from a rifle that he was “demonstrating” how to use.
- An unidentified Marble Falls, Texas, High School resource officer shot himself in the leg, apparently while seated in a parking area before a ball game.
- An unidentified off-duty female Michigan State Police officer’s gun was inside her purse when it fired [sic] a single shot while she was inside the Costo Wholesale warehouse in Oshtemo Township on Sunday. The discharged bullet struck her in the hand. No one else was injured by the shot, but two other people were hurt during the chaos caused by the gunshot.

- Follow-up. Citing self-defense, prosecutors have declined to charge a Hawaii man who was arrested on suspicion of murder after shooting a neighbor who crashed into a home with a front-end loader and opened fire at a gathering, killing three women.
- A concealed carrier who killed two people with one shot at a Detroit Lions fan tailgate Sunday acted in self-defense and won’t be criminally charged, even though the second fatality was an innocent bystander. But look for a civil suit.
- Intruder in an unoccupied home killed in self defense by responding relative. This is probably a pretty good example of what not to do. The cops were on the way. No one was home. Wait down the way for them to show up, instead of inserting yourself into a potentially fatal situation for nothing. It’s not about being justified or right, it’s about being smart and safe.

- XS Sights is now offering new, pre-drilled tritium Glow Dot front sights for S&W K-Frame, L-Frame, J-Frame, and Ruger SP101 revolvers. What’s new is the pre-drilling, and trust me that is a big, big help for DIY-ers with easier self-installation without the need for a gunsmith. (I once drilled and installed a no-hole XS front sight on a Ruger LCR, and trust me, there’s a reason they tell you to glue it on instead of trying to drill it. Success requires not a small amount of luck, and I don’t see how a gunsmith could do it without a bit of luck or a factory jig either.) The dual-illuminated front sight has a tritium vial surrounded by XS’ proprietary photoluminescent Glow Dot that absorbs ambient light to glow in low light. XS sights are backed by a Limited Lifetime Warranty. The company also offers a 12-year warranty on all tritium products. Green or orange, $65-$110.
