Another school massacre this week, with 10 dead and 7 wounded at Umpqua Community College in a rural part of Oregon. The killer, reportedly not a student or employee, was killed by responding armed officers, as usual, after the innocents were killed.
“[He started] asking people one by one what their religion was. ‘Are you a Christian?’ he would ask them, and if you’re a Christian, stand up. And they would stand up and he said, ‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you are going to see God in just about one second.’ And then he shot and killed them.” — parent of a student/witness
We understand that the incident was contained to one classroom. So much for lockdowns or calling for help.
The school reportedly has one security guard, who is unarmed and apparently was not in that room. The school reportedly had in recent months considered hiring an armed security guard but ultimately decided against the proposal, because “We thought we were a very safe campus, and having armed security officers on campus might change the culture,” according to the former college president and former deputy sheriff.
We have mixed reports of whether the school is a gun free zone. It appears that CCW with a permit IS legal at Oregon schools, while the policy of this school prohibits firearms “except as expressly authorized by law…” But some schools apparently haven’t read the law or the case law, and there is speculation that the school would discipline students or staff (but not visitors) who legally carry there. The school president reportedly stated after the attack that the school is a gun free zone. (Apparently not.) It seems certain that no one shot back until the cops arrived, and people died. An Air Force veteran who is also a student at the college told Breitbart News that he was about 200 yards away from the shooting but couldn’t get there in time to help, while an unarmed Army veteran charged the killer and was shot multiple times but survived.
We also have a report that a number of other military veterans were present at the college at the time of the shooting and that the veterans wanted to leave the classroom to try and stop the shooter, but the staff at the college stopped them from leaving the classroom. We don’t know how school staff stops a determined veteran.
We have no reports of any efforts made by the guard, the school president or the former president to stop the massacre.
Of course President Obama and the gun control minions came out of the woodwork like blowflies literally before the bodies were cold, clamoring for implementation of unrelated gun control proposals. Mr. Obama even said he SHOULD politicize the event. But the 16 black Americans shot and murdered in ghettos that same day, and the day before (about 6,000 per year), got no coverage. Neither did the 200+ homicides in Chicago alone just in the first half of this year. Chicago has all those gun laws he likes so much.
The media effect.
We allow adults to carry guns on the street, in banks, restaurants, stores, offices and country clubs. But not schools. Because we care more about our stuff than our kids.
